When to use it

Common questions
How much should I explain about why I am away?
Very little. An auto-reply goes to everyone who emails you, including people you do not know, so the reason rarely belongs in it. Sick leave and family matters especially: the occasion setting adjusts the wording without disclosing details.
Should I say I will reply when I am back?
Only if you will. If you plan to declare inbox bankruptcy, say so plainly and ask people to resend, which is more useful than a promise you will not keep. The message can say either, depending on what you tell it.
Do I need an alternative contact?
Not always, but it is the difference between an auto-reply that helps and one that just delays people. If you name someone, tell them first, and be specific about what counts as urgent enough to use them.
