What you are raising for, and why it matters to you
Running the Manchester Half Marathon for the stroke association. My dad had a stroke in 2023 at 61. Five weeks in hospital and two years of rehab. He can walk again and mostly get his words out, which the doctors were not certain about at the start. The rehab that got him there was partly funded by this charity, including the communication support group he still goes to every Thursday.

Appeal

In 2023, my dad had a stroke at 61. He spent five weeks in hospital, and the two years since have been about rehab: relearning how to walk, relearning how to get his words out. The doctors were not sure at the start that either would come back. He can do both now. Part of what got him there was funded by the Stroke Association, including a communication support group he still goes to every Thursday. On October 12, I am running the Manchester Half Marathon to raise money for them. I have not done anything like this before, so I will be honest: 13.1 miles is a real stretch for me, but nowhere near what my dad has had to do to get his words and his steps back. I am trying to raise 1,000 pounds. That money goes toward the rehab support, the therapy, and the support groups that helped my dad get his life back, and that help other stroke survivors and their families every day. If you can spare something, here is how to give: [link to donate]. Any amount helps, and if you can not give, sharing this with someone else means a lot too. Thank you for reading this far, and thank you if you give. It means more than I can easily put into words, which feels fitting given what this is for.

Short share message

On October 12 I'm running the Manchester Half Marathon for the Stroke Association, the charity that helped fund my dad's rehab after his stroke in 2023 (he's walking and talking again, which wasn't a given at the start). Trying to raise 1,000 pounds, would love your support: [link]

When to use it

Use this when you are raising money and need to explain why in a way that moves people without manipulating them. It works from your real reason and your real connection to the cause, and it will not invent statistics to make the case sound bigger.

Common questions

Will it guilt-trip people?
No, and it is specifically instructed not to. Manufactured urgency and implied obligation raise less money than a real reason honestly told, and they cost you something with the people who see through it. The strongest thing in the example is simply that the Thursday group still exists and he still goes.
Will it invent statistics about the cause?
No. It will not add a figure about how many people are affected or how far your money goes. If you want statistics, take them from the charity's own materials and put them in yourself, where you can be sure they are current and correctly quoted.
Do I have to share something personal?
No, though a genuine connection is what makes an appeal work. If your reason is simply that you think the cause matters, say that plainly. An honest general reason beats a borrowed personal story every time.
Is it free?
You can run it three times a day with no account. Signing in gives you renewing monthly credits, and this tool costs one credit per run with the one-click refinements included.
