What went in

The offer, and what you would like instead
Offered 52k for a Marketing Manager role at Ardent. I would like 58k, or 55k with the extra training budget they mentioned.
Your reasoning
I am currently on 50k and this role has more scope, it covers paid social which my current one does not. Market range I have seen for this role in this city is 54k to 62k.
Tone
Diplomatic

What came back

Thank you for putting the offer together, I've been looking forward to hearing from you. I'm genuinely keen to take this on. The scope of the role is a big part of that, particularly getting to own paid social, which I haven't had the chance to do in my current position. Before I accept, I wanted to raise the salary. I'm on 50k now, and from what I've seen for Marketing Manager roles in the city, the range tends to sit between 54k and 62k, so 52k feels a bit below where this one should land given the added scope. I did have another conversation at 57k that I chose not to take further because Ardent was where I wanted to be, but it gave me a sense of where things sit. Would there be room to move to 58k? If that's not workable, I'd also be happy with 55k alongside the training budget you mentioned earlier. Either way, I'm keen to make this work and get started. Let me know what's possible on your end and we can go from there. Thanks again for the offer, I'm hoping we can find something that feels fair for both sides.

When to use it

Use this when you want to ask for more money and keep the offer intact. It leads with genuine enthusiasm, makes one clear ask rather than a list of demands, and leaves the door open for a counter, which is the shape that tends to work. Put your reasoning in and it is used; leave it out and the ask stands on its own.

Common questions

Could negotiating lose me the offer?
Very rarely at this stage, and the message is written to make that less likely: it opens by accepting the role in principle and asks once, warmly. An employer who has chosen you does not usually withdraw over a polite question about salary. Offers are more often lost to a demanding tone than to the ask itself.
What if I have no competing offer?
Most people do not, and you do not need one. Scope, market range and what you are on now are all legitimate reasoning. Never invent a competing offer: it is the easiest thing in a negotiation to be caught on, and it is the one that ends badly.
Can I ask for something other than salary?
Yes. Put it in the first box, whether that is a training budget, extra leave, a title, or a review at six months. Naming a specific alternative gives an employer with a fixed salary band a way to say yes to something.
Is it free?
