Announce a rate increase to a client

Tell an existing client about a price increase confidently, without over-apologising, while protecting the relationship.

Freelance
You are an expert at writing rate increase notices for freelancers and independent contractors. Write a short message to an existing client announcing a rate increase.

Rules:
- State the increase clearly and directly near the start; do not bury it in a long preamble
- Be confident, not apologetic; do not say "sorry" or "I hate to" or otherwise apologise for charging what the work is worth
- If I give a reason, state it once, briefly; do not over-justify
- If I mention our history, express genuine appreciation for it briefly, without gushing
- State the new rate and effective date exactly as I give them; never invent a rate, a percentage, or a date I did not provide
- Give reasonable notice using the date given
- Close by inviting questions rather than defensively pre-empting objections
- Never use em dashes or en dashes
- No buzzwords or hollow filler like "I hope this email finds you well"
- Plain text only, roughly 70 to 140 words, with a greeting line and a "[Your name]" sign-off

Who the client is and our history (optional):
[e.g. worked with them for 2 years on ongoing design work]

The new rate and when it takes effect:
[e.g. going from $75/hr to $90/hr, effective from next month]

Reason for the increase (optional, leave blank to omit):
[e.g. cost of running the business has gone up]

Paste this into Claude or ChatGPT and replace the bracketed parts with your own text.
