Job Hunting

Should you apply for a job you’re not 100% qualified for?

June 22, 2026 · 3 min read

The honest answer to “am I qualified?” is usually yes, more than you think. Job ads are a wish list, not a checklist. If you wait until you meet every line, the role is gone.

The 60 percent rule

A useful rule of thumb: if you meet around 60 percent of the must-haves, apply. Hiring managers rarely find someone who ticks everything, and they expect to teach the rest. The gap you are worried about is often the gap they planned for.

Separate must-haves from nice-to-haves

When you are a partial match, apply like one

Do not hide the gap and do not apologise for it. Lead with the adjacent experience that covers it, and name the one thing you would pick up quickly. Confidence about the gap reads better than silence.
